It’s a bright beautiful day looking
so promising. Hope you are having a great day?
It’s good to have you here once
again.
Yesterday I wrote on Plan and
Planning with regards to family wears and dressing and I’m greatly fulfilled
with the messages I have been receiving on that, since yesterday. Please, let
us learn to use comment box because your comment could be what will change
someone’s life for good.
Today, we’ll be looking at Plan and
Planning with respect to family menu.
Sometime this year, I went to speak
to a group of men and women and our topic centered on family. In the course of
teaching, I told them that five hundred naira can make a balanced diet for a
family of 6 and there was confusion written on their faces, with loud murmur of
disbelief from them. But after teaching them a particular menu and we
calculated its cost, they were left in awe.
When we talk of good food – balanced
diet for the family, most people believe that
it’s all about money but it’s not
always the case. Many people spend so much preparing meals that will not
benefit the consumers nutritionally. As a woman who is expected to be a
homebuilder, how, what and when do you cook for your family? If you can
sincerely answer that question, it will go a long way to reveal to you the
things you do right or wrong and how to adjust. Are you one of those mothers
that pack “white noodles (indomie)” as children’s lunch at school, from Monday
to Friday, because “it’s cheaper and easier to cook”? Do you serve your family
fried yam as breakfast, boiled yam as lunch and pounded yam as dinner because
yam is the only foodstuff left in the store? Are you one of those women that
run helter-skelter to borrow or buy pepper, salt, etc. when cooking? My dear
reader, do not say, “It’s impossible! No woman can do that!” because I’m
writing based on the result of my research. As a woman of the house, how do you
stock up your store? Have you ever heard about KITCHEN BUDGET and what does it
mean to you?
For you to be a woman you need to be
at home, you must be familiar and in good terms with this beautiful woman
called Mrs. KITCHEN BUDGET because she is quite reliable and she can keep
secrets. (hehehehe! I’m writing from experience o!).
Budget is money allocated for a
particular purpose. Therefore, in a lay man’s language, kitchen budget is that particular
money set aside for everything about kitchen- talk of food stuffs, fuel for
cooking–kerosene/gas/firewood, etc. I always say that delicious and balanced
meal actually begins with kitchen budget.
The importance of kitchen budget
cannot be overemphasized. When you have kitchen budget, it acts as a check
against impulsive buying. You know that moment, when you go shopping and
beautiful set of cutleries, cooking pots, dinner set, etc. caught your
attention and you go like, “I have enough money so I can also buy them”. After
buying what you WANT but do not really NEED and it’s time to buy what you NEED,
you will be looking for your money and thinking that “pick pocketers” have
played fast one on you. But when you sit down at a corner to calculate what you
have spent so far, you will find out that nobody stole your money but you
actually spent your money on what you like and WANT but do not NEED. That is
when an idea of buying just tubers of yam and potatoes instead of varieties of
foodstuffs comes in, because you’re left with little or no money after buying
the things that are not needed. (heheheheh! All the ladies in the house, I dey
hail o! I’m actually writing from experience o). Without kitchen budget, don’t ever be tempted
to believing that you have enough money and can afford to buy anything GOOD you
see in the market because you may end up starving your family o! Without
budget, no amount of money is enough. Like my mentor always says, “Good things
no dey finish for market”. Leave that GOOD thing you want but do not NEED until when there is NEED for it.
How then can good and balanced diet
start from kitchen budget? Keep a date with us tomorrow same venue as we
discuss on that.
