Hello
and welcome to my world. Good to have you here once again.
Yesterday
I introduced a discussion on ATTITUDE. If you missed the write up, please read
an article on this blog titled, “Attitude Really Matters” It was an
introductory part of our today’s discussion. As we have been able to discuss on
what attitude is, we will be learning and discussing on how to improve on our
attitude.
In
truth, people generally don’t have a high level of attitude awareness. That is
a mistake because attitude is everything. It governs the way you perceive the
world and the way the world perceives you. Attitude really matters and I totally
agree with a saying that “Your attitude determines your altitude”. One of the
most important steps you can take toward achieving your greatest potential in
life is to learn to monitor your attitude and its impact on your work
performance, relationships and everyone around you.
We all have a choice. We
can choose an inner dialogue of self-encouragement and self-motivation, or we
can choose one of self-defeat and self-pity. It’s a power we all have. Each of
us encounters hard times, hurt feelings, heartache, physical and emotional
pain. The key is to realise that it’s not what happens to us that matters but
what matters most is how we choose to respond. Our minds work like computer which
can be programmed. We have the power to choose whether the software installed will
be productive or nonproductive. Our inner dialogue is the software that
programs our attitude, which determines how we present ourselves to the world
around us. You have control over the programming. Whatever you put into it is
reflected in what comes out.
Many
of us have behaviour patterns today that were programmed into our brains at a
very tender age. The information that was recorded by our brains could have
been completely inaccurate or cruel. The sad reality of life is that we will
continue to hear negative information, but we don’t have to program it into our
brains.
The
loudest and most influential voice you hear is your own inner voice, your self-critic.
It can work for or against you. It can make or mar you, depending on the
messages you allow. It can be optimistic or pessimistic. It can wear you down
or cheer you on. You control the sender and the receiver, but only if you
consciously take responsibility for and control over your inner conversation.
Habitual
bad attitudes are often the product of past experiences and events. Common
causes include low self-esteem, stress, fear, resentment, anger and an
inability to handle change. It takes serious work to discover the roots of harmful
attitude, but the rewards of ridding ourselves of this heavy baggage can last a
lifetime.
This
is how to improve on your attitude
- Be your own Coach through Affirmation: Encourage, motivate and inspire yourself with positive words no matter what you are going through. Even when others do not see the good in you, see the best in you. Use such words like, “I’m a champion, I’m born to succeed, I’m wonderfully and fearfully made, I’m a carrier of God glory and image therefore I’m beautiful, I’m handsome, I can do all things through Christ my Lord because He says so”. Just go on and motivate yourself
- Make sure that you discover what motivates you and stick to it.
- Work on your internal conversation—that little voice you listen to all day long—acts like a seed in the sense that, it programs your brain and affects your behaviour. Take a closer look at what you are saying to yourself every day. If it’s negative, please change the negative internal conversation to a positive one.
- Take advantage of the power of visualisation. Whatever you are going through, always visualise yourself coming out strong from that challenge. Nelson Mandela wrote extensively on how visualisation helped him to maintain a positive attitude while in imprisoned for 27 good years. “I thought continually of the day when I would walk free. I fantasized about what I would like to do,” he wrote in his autobiography.
- There’s power in positive greeting. No matter what you’re going through, do not wait for people to greet you first and do not wear your problems on your face that people will begin to ask you what the problem is. Wear your cute smiles always, it will lighten your load and make you see challenges as no big deal. It will also make you see the brighter side of life. Perceive life as a beautiful and priceless gift and you will attract people to you because most people enjoy working and living with others who try to live life for what it is—a beautiful gift. Always remember that every challenge is just a life process.
- Be enthusiastic in and about life: Enthusiasm is to attitude what breathing is to life. Enthusiasm gives you the ability to apply your gifts more effectively and beautifully. Enthusiasm is the burning desire that communicates commitment, determination and spirit. Enthusiasm means putting yourself in motion. It’s an internal spirit that speaks through your actions from your commitment and your belief in what you are doing. It is one of the most empowering and attractive characteristics you can have. No matter what is going on around you, be enthusiastic in and about life.
- Maintain a good sense of humor: The more humor and laughter in your life, the less stress you’ll have, which means more positive energy to help you put your attitude into action. Whenever I’m surrounded with pressure, I ease it out with humor. I can go chatting with my husband, children, relatives and close friends, exchanging humorous pictures and cartoons with them. Whoever that makes you laugh and your heart merry, chat with the person but make sure that your conversation is HEALTHY.
- Finally the last but not the least, in fact it’s the most important. Connect to your spiritual empowerment: The ultimate level of human needs extends into the spiritual realm. Just as we feed our bodies in response to our primary needs to survive physically, we also need to feed our spirit because we are spiritual beings. Many people find powerful and positive motivation in their faith and I happen to be one of them. Create and maintain a good personal relationship with God. Feed your mind and soul with the word of God. It goes a long way to affect your attitude positively.
